Skopje, 18 November 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi met Monday in Brussels with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, whom he thanked for the EP's strong support to North Macedonia's European prospects, and expressed assurance it will continue until the country's full-fledged membership in the European Union.
Interlocutors agreed that the Macedonian citizens expect a breakthrough, since the country has made concessions that have led to the NATO membership but not the start of the EU accession negotiations, the Parliament said in a press release.
EP President Metsola said she would visit the Western Balkans at the onset of 2025 and promote specific economic activities, such as infrastructure projects and termination of roaming charges, but also actions through the democracy support programme focused on the Parliament.
The main pillars of this programme are legislation and transparency, carried out through study visits and mediation training, with Speaker Gashi expressing his full commitment to their realization.
Gashi and Metsola also agreed on the benefit of the Euro-integration process for the country and its citizens but also the need for clear messages on the part of the Union, whereas the country must maintain its focus on the EU integration path while keeping the people's dignity, reads the press release.
