Mickoski: Even if Bulgarians are incorporated in Constitution tomorrow, a new requirement is a matter of months

Skopje, 4 December 2025 (MIA) - Every concession from Macedonia is resulting in a new requirement and that is why we need guarantees from the EU, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski told a press briefing on Thursday.

PM Mickoski said this demand is logical, considering past experience, which has shown that every concession creates room for a new requirement.

"The constitutional revision is just the beginning. Even if we incorporate the Bulgarians in the Constitution tomorrow, it is a matter of 3, 6 or 9 months before a new requirement emerges. Politics is one thing, national interest is entirely different. The question is do we continue on this naive path of making concessions. I don't think this path is the right one. The path taken by the Government is the difficult but not the embarrassing one," said Mickoski.

Regarding the initiative from Brussels and EU member-states for meetings discussing the impasse, the PM said neither the organizers nor the Macedonian side know if Bulgaria is ready to talk.

"Whether discussions are bilateral or mediated by Brussels is up to Bulgaria. First, if this is not a bilateral issue but a European one, then it is logical that we have the discussions with Brussels. Here, the Bulgarian side says we can solve this on our own because it is a bilateral issue. If it is a bilateral issue, then we are prepared to sit down and talk, whenever, wherever. If it is between us and Brussels, then we will discuss it there. It is up to them to decide," underlined Mickoski.
