Skopje, 21 April 2026 (MIA) - As a social state, Macedonia provides health insurance for all citizens. Citizens that cannot be insured on any ground are treated specifically through the Health Ministry programme that covers their health insurance, said Health Insurance Fund (HIV) director Sasho Klekovski on Tuesday.
Klekovski said there are currently 1,836,000 insured persons in the country, of whom 470,000 do not have any income.
"There are problems with the health insurance in certain cases but we are working on this. Regarding the criteria used for those 470,000 persons, there are two types of problems. There are those who have resigned or have been dismissed, and they need to be provided with smooth insurance transition. And there are those who are part of the informal economy or have revenues from abroad. This group should not be entitled to free health insurance," said Klekovski.
He added there might be cases of family members being insured through the a deceased policy holder.
"We are coordinating with the registry office in order to have regular checks and filtering of such health insurance," said Klekovski.
