Toshkovski: Safe City trial period shows fewer accidents and slower driving

Skopje, 14 December 2025 (MIA) – Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski expressed satisfaction with the results of the trial period of the Safe City project, highlighting that citizens have significantly reduced their driving speed and that the number of traffic accidents is declining. He emphasized that the sole purpose of the project is to save human lives.

“The trial period shows that Macedonia has the capability to be a normal country. I am proud that during this test phase, citizens understood the new measures and slowed down in the capital. They have shown they can act differently and are now true Europeans. The number of traffic accidents in Skopje has decreased, particularly those with severe injuries or fatalities,” Toshkovski said, answering a reporter’s question after the opening of the renovated Butel police station on Sunday.

He emphasized that respecting speed limits is key to reducing severe traffic consequences, pointing to global statistics.

“If we look at global statistics, at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour, almost no one survives; out of 10 people injured in an accident, all die. At 50 kilometers per hour, only two out of 10 injured survive, and at 30 kilometers per hour, 8 out of 10 survive,” Toshkovski said.

The issues drivers face after the cameras of the Safe City project were activated during the trial period until February 1, Toshkovski said, can be reported at a service point or via the project’s website.
