New substation unveiled in Skopje as EVN marks 20th anniversary

Skopje, 27 March 2026 (MIA) – Marking 20 years of EVN’s operations, dedicated work and investment in energy infrastructure, the new TS Central substation was put into operation Friday in Skopje. The €11 million infrastructure project is a strategic step toward ensuring stable electricity supply in the central urban area and meeting growing energy demands.

Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Bozhinovska in her speech noted that the facility is crucial component of the capital’s energy system.

“We are proud to open TS Central substation. This project is more than just infrastructure, it is a crucial component of stable power supply in the city center and a strategic investment in the security and stability of Skopje’s energy system. With an installed capacity of 120 megawatts, it is located exactly where it was most needed, in a zone of rapid urban growth, new consumers and a network that had already reached its capacity,” Bozhinovska said.

She pointed out that the existing substations in this area were constructed over 40 years ago and have long surpassed their intended capacity. With the opening of this facility, Bozhinovska said the system’s bottleneck is being overcome, establishing a new quality benchmark, in which over 30 companies participated.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said that the implementation of such a complex project in the city center represents a true architectural achievement, requiring extensive coordination between the Government and the company.

“Implementing this project in the very heart of the city is, I would say, close to an art. What we see is just one part, while the main element is hidden underground in the infrastructure. It was a collective effort by the Government and EVN to bring this project to life as it stands today. Building this facility in such a central location, surrounded by embassies and key structures, is indeed an architectural achievement. I congratulate all participants and thank everyone who helped,” Nikoloski said.

He underscored that the Government’s policy is aimed at backing the energy transition, pointing out that the country is positioning itself as a regional leader through Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski’s initiative for an integrated and unified regional approach.

Austria’s Ambassador to the country, Martin Pammer, expressed satisfaction with the cooperation to date, emphasizing EVN as the most important Austrian investment contributing to the country’s EU integration efforts.

“The opening of the TS Central substation is a sign of success and a sign of strong cooperation in North Macedonia. Let me first congratulate EVN Macedonia on 20 years of successful presence in the country and its excellent cooperation with Macedonian institutions, especially with Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska and Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski. The energy sector is one of the areas with high potential for North Macedonia and EVN plays a key role in its modernization, ensuring stable energy supply for citizens,” Pammer stated.

The Ambassador Pammer announced that Austrian businesses are ready to further contribute to the country, adding that Prime Minister Mickoski is expected to visit Vienna in mid-April, which he said would mark another step toward intensifying bilateral cooperation at all levels.
