Mitsotakis informed EU leaders about "direct violation of Prespa Agreement by president, PM in North Macedonia"

Mitsotakis informed EU leaders about

Athens, 28 June 2024 (MIA) - Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during Thursday's European Council meeting informed his counterparts about, as he said, "the fact that the president and prime minister of North Macedonia have been directly violating the Prespa Agreement", noting it is imperative for everyone to understand that "respecting of European legislation evidently includes consistent adherence of international treaties".

At a news conference in Brussels after the EU summit, Mitsotakis was asked about Greece's relations with our country amongst our things, MIA's Athens correspondent reports.

"Since there was a segment about the enlargement issue, I took an initiative to inform my counterparts at the European Council about the developments in North Macedonia and the fact that the president and the prime minister have been directly violating the Prespa Agreement by ignoring the erga omnes and chosing to use another name instead of the constitutional name of the country for internal use, which is completely against the spirit of the Prespa Agreement," Mitsotakis said.

He reiterated that the EU perspective of the country includes adherence of international treaties.

"I absolutely made it clear that if Skopje keeps on insisting along this line, in essence it will make it extremely hard, even possibly annul every process of quick integration into the European family. I believe that everyone should understand the consequences from their actions and be aware that respecting of European legislation evidenly includes consistent adherence of international agreements, in this case signed by both parties," stated Mitsotakis.

The Greek oposition party Syriza in a press release reacted to the meeting of President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova with officials of MAKEDON, associations of Macedonians and refugee children from the Aegean part of Macedonia, condemning "the irredentist positions" and calling on the Greek government to internationalize the issue.

Criticizing the Greek government, Syriza says it bears heavy responsibility for the damages inflicted on the national interests as a result of its "irresponsible foreign policy" by avoiding for years to be actively involved in the agreement so as to maintain interparty balance.
