Mickoski: Position on single electoral district remains the same

Skopje, 27 March 2026 (MIA) – VMRO-DPMNE is reaffirming its position on single electoral district and on the diaspora to be allowed to vote, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Friday when asked about talks taking place as part of the working Electoral Code group.

“We’re in favor of single district and we’re not changing positions, which is something I said at the leaders’ meeting. But also, a threshold should be agreed with the other political parties. It’s logical for the diaspora to vote in the potential single district. The problem it faces is the fact that some diplomatic offices and consulates, mainly in Australia and North America, are very far away and there is not much interest. Depending on our national legislation, I believe we should open more polling stations that aren’t exclusively in diplomatic offices so as to allow the process to be more successful,” Mickoski said speaking to members of the media.

Asked for a comment of remarks by Arben Taravari of the Alliance for Albanians, who had quit the ruling coalition, criticizing Vlen, the government junior coalition partner, Mickoski said relations with Vlen are extremely principled “unlike those with Taravari.”

“Relations [with Vlen] are extremely principles, unlike the relations we’d had with Taravari, which were manipulative. I guess he is being the same now with his new coalition partner DUI. Back then he strongly criticized DUI when talking with me, I suppose he is now criticizing me to win Ali Ahmeti’s approval,” stated Mickoski.

Commenting on possible government reshuffle, the prime minister reiterated it would be discussed in May or June.
