Mickoski: Gov't to react fiercely to price hikes

Skopje, 3 January 2025 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Friday basic foodstuff prices are being monitored on daily basis by the State Market Inspectorate, pledging the government will react "fiercely if unwanted incidents are detected again."

Speaking to reporters, Mickoski said he expected markets to continue to reduce product prices after increasing them as prices of products included in the so called New Year's Basket campaign dropped. After the price increase, the government warned it will cap prices.

"We had to intervene to show how serious we are. Certain markets shouldn't make additional profits off on the backs of the citizens. They dropped prices on the eve of New Year's Day. I expect this trend to continue in the coming days," stated Mickoski.

In a press briefing in late December, Economy Minister Besar Durmishi said a decision on caping prices has been prepared and if the State Market Inspectorate identifies misuse of basic foodstuff prices, the government will immediately pass a decision caping prices.
