Skopje, 4 October 2024 (MIA) – The rate of breast cancer deaths has been on the rise in the past four years in the country, shows the latest report of the Public Health Institute issued to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), celebrated globally every October.

The most common cause of death from malignant neoplasms in women from 2010 until 2023 is breast cancer, notes the report.

“310 women died in 2010 of breast cancer; 337 women in 2021; 356 women in 2022; and 346 women in 2023. The analysed period records an increase in the number of deaths among women from breast cancer,” says the Public Health Institute. 

Breast cancer is on the top of the list of number of newly registered cases from malignant neoplasms among women in Macedonia from 2017 until 2021.

“808 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017; 778 women in 2019, and 806 women in 2021. The analysed period records an oscillation in the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer,” show the Institute’s statistics. 

Established in 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims at promoting screening and prevention of the disease, which affects one in eight women in the United States and 2.3 million women around the world.
