Iran demands clarity from US as Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue

Tehran, 8 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - The Iranian government has called on Washington to clarify its stance on the ceasefire agreement as Israel continues to attack Lebanon on Wednesday.

"The Iran–U.S. Ceasefire terms are clear and explicit: the U.S. must choose—ceasefire or continued war via Israel. It cannot have both," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in a post on X.

"The world sees the massacres in Lebanon. The ball is in the U.S. court, and the world is watching whether it will act on its commitments."

Iran and the US agreed on a two-week pause in fighting and the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz overnight under a last-ditch deal to avert a massive wave of strikes threatened by US President Donald Trump.

The agreement was praised by politicians worldwide, but concern remains over the situation in Lebanon, with attacks ongoing by Israel and Iran threatening to withdraw from the agreement in protest.

Iran sees the ongoing Israeli attacks as a breach of the agreement with the US.

The pact, brokered by Iran, also explicitly applies to Lebanon, though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disagreed. He said the ceasefire only applies to the conflict between the US and Iran – but not to the operation against Hezbollah, which is allied with Iran.

Israel also accuses Iran of continuing to attack the country after the ceasefire came into effect.

Iran reportedly threatened to withdraw from the ceasefire in protest if the Israeli attacks on Lebanon went ahead, and halt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway, crucial to global oil and gas trade, has been largely closed since the United States and Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran on February 28.

Trump had made reopening the strait a condition for the ceasefire and had threatened to target Iran's energy sector and infrastructure, including bridges, if Tehran failed to comply.
