Hosts Morocco to face Cameroon in Afcon quarter-finals

London, 5 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Cameroon will face hosts Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after beating South Africa 2-1 in Rabat on Sunday.

Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane scored to put the Indomitable Lions within sight of victory before a late strike from Evidence Makgopa gave South Africa hope.

Tchamadeu opened the scoring in the 34th minute when South Africa failed to clear a corner and Cameroon defied driving rain to double their lead when Kofane headed home early in the second half.

South Africa pressed in the second half and Cameroon goalkeeper Devis Epassy was forced to make a series of good saves before Makgopa's close-range effort made it a nervy finish for the favourites.

Earlier, Brahim Diaz fired hosts Morocco into the last eight with a 1-0 win over Tanzania.

Real Madrid winger Diaz struck in the 64th minute in Rabat, lashing home at the near post from an acute angle after being set up by Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi.

Hakimi hit the crossbar in a far from convincing display by the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists but the 1976 champions are one step closer to a second African title.

Tanzania managed just one shot on target with Mohamed Hussein denied by Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou.
