City of Skopje and UNOPS sign Memorandum of Understanding aimed at improving air quality

Skopje, 26 August 2024 (MIA) - The City of Skopje and the United Nations Office for Project Services signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a joint implementation of additional activities aimed at improving the air quality in Skopje, the City of Skopje said in a press release Monday.

At the signing ceremony, Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska highlighted the importance of the EU’s clean air project, which is being implemented by UNOPS with the European Union’s assistance.

“As a result of the EU’s clean air project, we are procuring six environmentally friendly CNG buses, establishing urban green belts with over 3000 trees, including the mega park in Karposh, and drafting a Feasibility Study for the expansion of the heating system in Skopje. All these actions are aimed at improving the air quality in Macedonia,” Mayor Arsovska said.

The City of Skopje is the first local self-government unit that UNOPS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with as part of the EU’s clean air project, which will provide EUR 10 million over three years through the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance.

“We are grateful for the EU’s firm support of this initiative. The goal of the cooperation with the City of Skopje is improving air quality by reducing PM 2.5 and PM 10 emissions. Apart from Skopje, UNOPS will also assist Kumanovo, Tetovo, and Bitola,” UNOPS representative Michela Telatin said.
