Trump wins White House for historic second term, US media project

Washington, 6 November 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Republican candidate Donald Trump is set for a second term as US president after defeating Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, US broadcasters projected early on Wednesday.

US networks Fox News, CNN and NBC declared Trump the incoming president after projecting that he had secured enough Electoral College votes following wins over Harris in hard-fought battleground states including Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Trump, who has never conceded losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden and was indicted for trying to overturn the results, put immigration, inflation and crime at the centre of his populist campaign.

His stances on foreign policy - from his antipathy toward military aid for Ukraine to his vow to impose across-the-board tariffs on imports - has ignited anxiety among Washington’s allies and foes alike.

The victory of a twice-impeached former president marks a stunning political comeback and affirms just how tight his grip on the Republican Party is.

At the age of 78, the real estate mogul is the oldest person to ever be elected US president.

In the campaign’s most chilling moment, Trump was shot and slightly wounded in his right ear by an assailant who opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania. He narrowly avoided death but one of his supporters in the crowd was killed.
