Gashi: Citizens expect greater parliamentary oversight and control over government’s work

Skopje, 20 January 2026 (MIA) - The citizens expect the Parliament to strengthen its oversight and control over the work of the Government, said Speaker Afrim Gashi at a debate Tuesday on parliamentary oversight and control in North Macedonia through the prism of Parliament's oversight capacity, held in cooperation with the Parliamentary Support Program and the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

The debate, during which a research on parliamentary oversight and control were presented, also discussed the implementation and efficiency of Parliament’s new Rules of Procedure.

Gashi said certain dilemmas can be noted in the implementation of the new Rules of Procedure, which, he said, was adopted with political consensus but without the inclusion of parliamentary experts and the academic public in its drafting and adoption.

The author of the research, Professor Denis Preshova, conducted a comparative analysis with the legal and constitutional provisions of parliaments in the region, as well as the British Parliament and the U.S. Senate, noting that the Macedonian Parliament has broader political competencies, overseeing the work of the Government, as well as certain independent and regulatory bodies. Preshova also stressed that compared to the other legislatures in the region, the Macedonian Parliament has the most working bodies, i.e., committees.
