Trebenishta golden masks to be shown in Sofia following Skopje exhibition

Skopje, 23 August 2023 (MIA) - The exhibition of unique findings from the Trebenishte necropolis, which for the first time was staged in Skopje in 2019 in cooperation between museums from North Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria, is set to open before the Bulgarian public at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The Ministry of Culture announced in a press release on Wednesday that the government reviewed and adopted their report over the realization of an international exhibition which is unique due to the findings that give a glimpse of life near Lake Ohrid from the 6th to the 4th century BC. The exhibition will include the famous golden funeral masks that are currently kept in Belgrade, Sofia and one in Ohrid, and which were displayed together for the first time at this exhibition.

In addition to the uniqueness of the findings, the site is especially unique because archeologists from three different countries worked together to affirm the cultural heritage from the Trebenishte necropolis. As a result of the cooperation between the expert teams of the Archeological Museum of North Macedonia, National Archaeological Institute in Bulgaria and the National Museum of Serbia, where the valuable artifacts are currently kept, the exhibition was staged for the first time in 2019 rounding off the unique story about the accidental discovery of 1918 at Trebenishte village, near the Ohrid Lake.

In a press release, the Ministry stated that the unique exhibition "100 years of Trebenishte", which was open in Skopje for 6 months, was received with great interest, and will open in Sofia under the name "105 years of Trebenishte".

"With this exhibition, a work of cooperation between three countries, tells the special story of Trebenishte, which is the first and perhaps only example of an archeological site being explored by three countries, and is now being promoted by three museums in Skopje, Belgrade and Sofia," the press release added.ssh/ad/
