Skopje, 21 September 2023 (MIA) — Sixty years after the catastrophic 1963 earthquake, an exhibition on Skopje’s reconstruction and Greek architect Constantinos A. Doxiadis’ contribution to the redesign of the city, titled "The Future as a Project: Doxiadis in Skopje," will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art and be on display through Jan. 20, 2024.
According to organizers, the architectural exhibition showcases Doxiadis' work including a detailed survey of the affected areas, a series of reports, housing studies, and thoughts and diagrams for a new master plan. It features the work of Kenzo Tange for Skopje’s city center, and showcases a series of modernist buildings authored by leading Yugoslavian architects that still stand in the city today.
"Doxiadis was one of the international experts invited by the UN to participate in Skopje’s replanning process. His archive reveals a strong commitment to and belief in the project, and a personal interest in the reconstruction of the city that goes beyond professional commitment and reveals empathy for his neighboring nation," organizers write.
The exhibition was first shown at the Athens' Benaki Museum in 2018.
It was curated by Jovan Ivanovski, Vladimir Deskov, Ana Ivanovska Deskova, Kalliopi Amygdalou, Kostas Tsiambaos, Tea Damjanovska, Mihajlo Stojanovski and Christos Kritikos.
"The Future as a Project: Doxiadis in Skopje" was organized by the Association for Support and Promotion of Culture - Contineo 2020 with funding from the Ministry of Culture. mr/
