Damjan Gacov - first and youngest Macedonian to be appointed assistant coach of a U.S. university team

Skopje, 1 April 2026 (MIA) - Twenty-two-year-old Damjan Gacov has officially been appointed basketball assistant coach of Stanton University in Los Angeles, becoming the first and youngest Macedonian to ever be part of a coaching staff of a university team in the United States.

Damjan Gacov is a third-year student in sports management and business administration, combining his basketball experience with academic knowledge. The University says it has recognized his potential and work ethic, and decided to give him a chance in the coaching staff, a rare occasion for students at his age.

Gacov started playing basketball at the age of six, with KK Vardar being his first team, and later playing for the Macedonian national team's junior categories. He graduated from the Layton High School in Utah and then went on to study at the Stanton University.

The Stanton University has told MIA that Gacov's work ethic and energy were crucial for his appointment, while expecting his youth and knowledge of European basketball to usher in a new spirit to the team.

"We have been following his development for a while. He has an exceptional basketball IQ and approach to the game, as well as the mentality that corresponds to our philosophy. Despite his youth, the commitment and capability to communicate with the players are at the highest level," says head coach Michael Acuna.

His former Vardar coach Nikola Danev says Damjan had the character of a winner and was always hungry to make a point on the field.

"He had a good three-point shot, spent several seasons in our club and brought a few trophies in the cabinet. I am pleased to hear that Damjan fit into one of the best basketball systems in the world," says Danev.

According to him, Gacov is not only an excellent player but also a great person.

"Every coach would want to have a person like him in the team. This is a big step forward for him and I am certain that he will continue to develop and leave a strong impression," notes Danev and wishes Gacov success in the United States.

The Stanton university programme is renowned for its development of players and coaches, with Gacov's appointment seen as a big opportunity not only for him but for all Macedonian athletes dreaming of a career in the U.S.

Gacov says his appointment shows that commitment, hard work and courage can produce results.

"This is a tremendous honor and responsibility. I come from a small country and big dreams. I want to show that Macedonian coaches and players can be competitive at the highest level. I would like to thank all those who believed in me. This is just the beginning," says Gacov.

Meeting with NBA stars Jokić and Bogdanović

During his stay in the United States, Gacov has had the opportunity to attend a number of NBA games and see firsthand the best players in the world.

During a recent NBA game in Los Angeles, Gacov briefly met with NBA's three-time MVP, Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokić, and the LA Clippers' Bogdan Bogdanović.
