Book launches in Skopje, Veles, Kumanovo for Norwegian writer Hilde Myklebust's 'Splintered'

Skopje, 8 October 2024 (MIA) -- Norwegian writer Hilde Myklebust will attend Tuesday a book launch in Skopje for the Macedonian translation of her debut novel for young readers, "Splintered" ("Splintra," 2022). She will attend two more launches, one in Veles and one in Kumanovo, on Wednesday, organizers said.

Myklebust's book was translated from the Norwegian by Iskra Badeva. It was published in Macedonian under the title „Распарчени“ (Bata press, 2024) with the support of the European Union's Creative Europe program and the Ministry of Culture.

The book was released under the publisher's "For Their Future" imprint, a series of 15 books for children and young adults by 15 renowned European authors. Several of them are expected to attend the launches planned for their books in Macedonian during 2024.

"Splintered" is a vibrant novel about intense emotions, friendship and "being happy and sad when something wonderful and something awful happens at the same time," according to the publisher's press release.

The book tells the story of Mia and her group of friends, who are enjoying the summer together before starting high school and scattering in different directions. During summer break, Mia and Are grow close and it is difficult to tell the difference between friendship and what may be love.

"Autumn arrives and Mia moves into dorm. She blossoms in her new environment on the music program, throwing herself into musicals and concerts, dorm life, parties and new friends. Then Are gets ill. Very ill," the release says.

Hilde Myklebust (b. 1979, Syltedalen in Vanylven) is considered one of the most important contemporary poets in Norway. She studied Literature and Theatre at the University of Bergen. In May 2020 she was awarded with “Diktartavla” (“The Poet’s Writing Desk") poetry prize. She has written three critically acclaimed collections of poetry.

She is also the author of children's picture books, including "Ylva and the wild Goats" (2020).

"Splintered" is her first novel for young adults. It was nominated for the Norwegian 2022 Brageprisen best children’s book award and the Norwegian 2023 Uprisen best youth literature award. It also made the shortlist for the international White Ravens 2023 award. mr/
