Albanian President Meta against decoupling of Albania and North Macedonia on EU accession path
Skopje, 10 January 2022 (MIA) – I would not like to see us decoupled because we are neighboring countries and Albania is interested in seeing North Macedonia make progress, says Albanian President Ilir Meta.
President Meta told TV21 that both countries should invest efforts in moving together on the path, whereas bilateral issues should not be an obstacle in the EU accession of any country.
“Bulgaria’s veto is unjustified, it is unacceptable to have a bilateral issue becoming an obstacle for enlargement. If this were the case, every EU member-state could veto anyone,” says Meta.
He added that the Macedonian-Bulgarian dispute would be on the agenda of his coming meeting with Bulgarian counterpart Rumen Radev.
President Meta is paying a visit to Skopje and is set to meet with host Stevo Pendarovski and Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi on Tuesday.
