Skopje, 11 July 2024 (MIA) – The 23rd edition of CINEDAYS, the international festival of European film, starts Thursday in Skopje. Running through July 17, over 40 films will be screened at several venues in the capital, including the park behind the Youth Cultural Center (MKC), Frosina movie theater and the open-air movie theater at the Cinematheque. 

Macedonian and international films and co-productions will be vying for awards, which are also part of the festival’s official selection, gala program, SEE Program, MK Shorts. 

A retrospective of Montenegrin late director Veljko Bulajic’s films will be held and short films by European auteur Wim Wenders will be also screened.

The CINEDAYS Gala Program features films who had their premiere at this year’s Cannes festival, including the latest works by David Cronenberg, Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, etc. 

This year’s CINEDAYS will open with the Macedonian-Danish cooperation of the bands Efterkland and the Makedonium Band, which had their concert premiere outside the Makedonium monument in Krishevo in April 2023, whereas the film premiere took place at a Copenhagen festival in March 2024. 

“The film chronicles the journey of the Danish band in a wonderful, spontaneous and charming way through a tour across Macedonia,” said MKC, one of the film’s producers. 

The international project “Living Music”, helmed by music professor Darija Andovska, will take place throughout the festival, which includes students and recently graduated directors and composers from Europe to write film scores.

The festival also includes live performances by Efterklang: Makedonium Band, Turbo Trans Turisti, SIZ and Cyril-Cyril.

CINEDAYS is funded by the City of Skopje, the EU Delegation through the EU Film Festivals program, the Film Agency in partnership with Publicis and the Cinematheque of the Republic of North Macedonia.
