Explosives found on gas pipeline in Serbia that leads to Hungary

Belgrade/Budapest, 5 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Explosives "of devastating force" and the associated fuses were found on a gas pipeline in Serbia leading to Hungary, President Aleksandar Vučić said Sunday.

Vučić said on Instagram he had already discussed the matter by phone with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Orbán confirmed the call with Vučić and announced a crisis meeting of his country's defence council for Sunday afternoon.

Hungary is due to hold a parliamentary election in a week, on April 12. Investigations into the discovery of the explosives were continuing, Vučić and Orbán said. The two have long maintained good relations.

Vučić said the explosives were found near the village of Velebit on the Hungarian border on the Balkan Stream pipeline. The pipeline transports Russian natural gas from Turkey via Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary.
