Deepening U.S. strategic partnership in focus as Speaker Gashi holds meetings in Washington

Skopje, 5 February 2026 (MIA) - As part of his working visit to Washington, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi held multiple meetings reaffirming excellent bilateral relations, strategic partnership between the two countries and shared commitment to deepening transatlantic cooperation. 

Speaker Gashi met with Daniel J. Lawton, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. State Department's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, the Parliament said in a press release. 

"The meeting reaffirmed the steadfast partnership between the two countries, built on shared democratic values, commitment to the rule of law and the fight against corruption, as well as commitment to international peace and stability. Interlocutors exchanged views on current geopolitical developments, security challenges and the constructive role of the Republic of North Macedonia as a factor of stability in the Western Balkans. Speaker Gashi briefed participants in the meeting on ongoing efforts for full integration in the European Union, expressing gratitude for the continued support from the United States in the reform process," reads the press release. 

Parliament Deputy Speakers Antonijo Miloshoski and Jovan Mitreski, and a government delegation consisting of Ministers Stefan Andonovski and Zlatko Perinski, as well as the Government’s Secretary-General Igor Janushev also attended the meeting alongside Speaker Gashi. 

In addition, Gashi met with former U.S. Ambassador to North Macedonia Philip Reeker, discussing recent political developments and deepening strategic partnership with the United States.
