Debate on draft law on public prosecutor’s office

Skopje, 17 March 2026 (MIA) – During the 57th session of the Committee on Political System and Inter-Community Relations on Tuesday, a public debate will be held on the draft law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which envisages fundamental reforms in the organization and functioning of the prosecutorial system. Moreover, Parliament is expected Wednesday to decide on the proposal to appoint Nenad Saveski as the new state public prosecutor.

The public debate follows Parliament’s decision establishing the necessity of the law, through which it passed the initial phase of parliamentary procedure.

The proposed law foresees modernization of the legal framework, the introduction of a merit-based system for prosecutors’ appointment, advancement, and assessment and the reinforcement of guarantees for their independence.

Among the key novelties are a more efficient evaluation system, more precise criteria for professionalism, improved case management, and a more detailed disciplinary procedure with clear deadlines and mechanisms to prevent abuse.

The law increases transparency in selecting the Public Prosecutor, with public council sessions, candidates presenting their programs, and their biographies made public.
