'Worth It' coalition: DUI has passed the language law even though Venice Commission has questioned its legality

Skopje, 9 December 2024 (MIA) - The tricks of the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), who want to present themselves as saviours for the problems they themselves created, won't work. Albanians can remain calm, the Albanian language will be protected, said Saranda Imeri-Stafai from the 'Worth It' coalition on Monday, after a meeting of the coalition's coordinating body and party leaders, together with ministers from the ruling coalition.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Imeri-Stafai said that DUI has passed the Law on the Use of Languages even though the Venice Commission has questioned the legality of three articles of the law.

"This party passed the language law with anomalies. Second, they sent the law to the Venice Commission which questioned the legality of three key articles, and after realizing that they would be the opposition, they wanted to provoke interethnic tensions through installations in the Constitutional Court in order to avoid responsibility for corrupt former officials, and now they want to present themselves as the saviours of the Albanian language by setting up tents," said Imeri-Stafai.

She added that there has been an extensive discussion at the meeting about the latest developments related to the opposition DUI, which started an initiative on Sunday "to watch over the language" day and night in front of the Constitutional Court until the session on the Law on the Use of Languages is held.

"The meeting discussed in detail the latest events and the divisive rhetoric of the opposition, which tries to manipulate public opinion while allegedly safeguarding the Albanian language, with scenarios of Nikola Gruevski from 8 years ago with the tents in front of the SEC. They were shown a yellow card in the presidential and parliamentary elections, now it is time for a red card," said Imeri-Stafai.

Activists of the opposition DUI gathered in front of the Constitutional Court on Sunday, and, as DUI vice-president Bujar Osmani confirmed for MIA, they will remain there day and night until the session scheduled for December 11 takes place.
