Two people face criminal charges for migrant smuggling
- A 33-year-old person from Skopje and a 31-year-old person from Gevgelija suspected of migrant smuggling, have been questioned by the police at the Department for Cross-Border Crime, Migration, Foreign Nationals and Readmission in Gevgelija on Wednesday, the Ministry of Interior said in a press release on Thursday.
Skopje, 4 January 2024 (MIA) - A 33-year-old person from Skopje and a 31-year-old person from Gevgelija suspected of migrant smuggling, have been questioned by the police at the Department for Cross-Border Crime, Migration, Foreign Nationals and Readmission in Gevgelija on Wednesday, the Ministry of Interior said in a press release on Thursday.
"Police officers from the Bogorodica Police Station spotted an Audi passenger vehicle with Gevgelija license plates and a Mercedes passenger vehicle with Skopje license plates transporting migrants along the Smokvica-Prdejci regional road," reads the press release.
The police found the Audi vehicle in Gevgelija with two persons in it, and upon carrying out a search at one of the suspects' yard, police officers also found the Mercedes vehicle with five migrants from China, the press release adds.
In addition, during the search of the suspect's yard, police officers have also found a Volkswagen Passat passenger vehicle with license plates from another vehicle.
The migrants and the vehicles have been transferred to a reception-transit center for further proceedings, and a public prosecutor has been informed about the case. Appropriate charges will follow upon completing the documentation on the case.
