Report: Milan's Florenzi under investigation for betting scandal

Rome, 16 November 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Italian international Alessandro Florenzi of Milan is under investigation for his involvement in the latest betting scandal in Italian football, according to a media report on Wednesday.

The Turin public prosecutor's office has now also opened an investigation into Florenzi due to allegations of illegal sports betting, as the Italian news agency AGI reported.

The 32-year-old is expected to be questioned by the public prosecutor's office soon.

Italian football was rocked by a betting scandal involving three young Azzurri stars in mid-October. At that time, it became known that the public prosecutor's office in Turin and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) were investigating allegations of illegal betting against Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, both of whom play in the English Premier League.

Nicolò Fagioli of Juventus is at the centre of the investigation. They are suspected of being involved in illegal online sports betting.

According to Italian media reports, Fagioli and Zaniolo are cooperating with the authorities. Fagioli denies having bet on his own team's matches.

Zaniolo has since claimed to have occasionally played poker and blackjack on illegal platforms, but never bet on football, according to AGI.

Both are apparently hoping for lighter penalties as a result.

Players are not allowed to bet on sports in which they themselves are active.

The betting scandal has already had its first consequences. Sandro Tonali has been banned for 10 months and must undergo therapy.
