Bucharest, 16 November 2024 (dpa/MIA) - A Nations League match between Romania and Kosovo in Bucharest was abandoned on Friday after Kosovar players left the field during stoppage time, following what appeared to be provocations from Romanian fans.
The incident occurred in the eighth minute of stoppage time, with the score tied at 0-0.
Reports suggest the Kosovar players left the pitch after fans in the crowd shouted "Serbia!"
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) made the decision to abandon the match just over an hour after the interruption.
"UEFA will communicate further information in due course," the association said on its website.
TV footage showed some players and staff from the Kosovar team making the controversial double-headed eagle gesture towards the fans. This symbol, derived from Albania's flag, represents solidarity among ethnic Albanians. However, for many Serbs, the gesture stirs painful memories of the Kosovo War (1998-1999) and Kosovo's secession from Serbia.
The Kosovo team left the pitch following a lengthy discussion with the referee. About 45 minutes later, the Romanian team also exited the field.
Spectators were instructed to leave the stadium after an announcement was made over the loudspeaker.
