Report: EU says no signs of large migration flows from Iran so far

Brussels, 5 March 2026 (dpa/MIA) – The escalating conflict involving Iran is not expected to trigger mass migration towards Europe, the European Commission said, citing assurances from Turkey about border controls.

EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner told Germany's Bild newspaper in remarks published on Wednesday that Turkey had "closed its borders towards Iran," referring to talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Brunner said Fidan had assured him that Turkey remained committed to maintaining strong cooperation with the European Union. Both sides were interested in strengthening cooperation further, the commissioner added.

Brunner had already said on Monday that no significant movements had yet been observed at Iran's external borders. Authorities were continuing to monitor the situation and remained in close contact with partners in the Middle East and with international organizations, he said.
