Skopje, 10 September 2024 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova received Tuesday the credentials of new Bulgarian Ambassador Zhelyazko Radukov, wishing him success in the post and enhancement of relations and cooperation towards bringing the countries and their citizens closer.

President Siljanovska Davkova said bilateral relations are unfortunately not at the desired level and not befitting neighbors and NATO allies, one also being an EU member and the other a membership candidate, the President's Office said in a press release.

"There is a need for a change in the approach through development of relations and creating a positive difference. In this sense, I expect and hope that you will work on developing cooperation in fields of mutual interest, with a focus on the present and the future. We value the importance of dialogue that builds and fosters friendship through mutual respect of two neighboring European countries. In this regard, a respect of mutual dignity, commitment to European integration and goodneighborly relations are fully complementary and common interests of both countries," said Siljanovska Davkova.

Ambassador Radukov said his mission has started amid exceptional circumstances - devastating effects of the war in Ukraine, the Middle East conflict, the consequences of the pandemic, and the political and societal polarization of the global community.

"The best response is to unite against security threats. As a result of the daily turbulence in our bilateral relations, as if we have forgotten that our countries are allies in the most powerful political and military alliances. This membership has brought about countless benefits, but not free of charge. Our countries have paid and will continue to pay the required price to be allies with all partners, including between ourselves," said Radukov and added that Corridor VIII is a project that is important for the security of both countries and the Alliance as well.

As such, he added, its importance cannot be underestimated both from a civilian and security or military standpoint, reads the press release.
