Parliamentary committee passes ratifications of protocols for Sweden and Finland’s NATO accession
Skopje, 26 July 2022 (MIA) – The parliamentary foreign affairs committee unanimously adopted on Tuesday the bills on the ratification of the Protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty regarding the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO.
Both ruling party and opposition MPs backed the accession of the two Scandinavian countries to NATO, stressing that these are two friendly countries that have always supported the Republic of North Macedonia since its independence, and in terms of its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
According to the lawmakers, Sweden and Finland’s NATO accession will strengthen the security architecture in the Scandinavian part of Europe and this will represent an added value for the Alliance.
NSDP MP Sonja Mirakovska, supporting the signing of the protocols, voiced hope that they will be unanimously passed at Wednesday’s plenary session.
Following a short break, newly appointed Ambassador to the United States Zoran Popov will present his theses before the foreign affairs committee, behind closed doors. A representative of the Foreign Ministry has told the committee that due to the sensitive information that Popov is to present it has been requested that his address is closed to the public and only attended by MPs who have security certificates.
In addition, newly appointed Ambassador to Canada, Agron Buxhaku, the Ambassador to Norway, Driton Kuci, the Ambassador to Slovakia, Evgenija Ilieva, and the Ambassador to Belgium, Metodija Belevski, are to also present their diplomatic platforms to members of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee.
