Offensive graffiti removed, perpetrators unknown, monument sign honoring Ss. Cyril and Methodius restored

Gostivar, 23 May 2024 (MIA) — The Gostivar monument sign that was vandalized Thursday has been repainted and restored to its original appearance featuring the Cyrillic and Glagolitic scripts as well as national flag motifs, MIA's Gostivar correspondent reports.

Gostivar Municipality councilor Ema Neshkovska strongly condemned the defacement of the original depiction celebrating the Macedonian flag and alphabet.

As one of the initiators of the monument message honoring Ss. Cyril and Methodius Day, May 24, Neshkovska said the monument sign was now redesigned so it would be protected from potential damage.

The initiators had permission from the local government to paint the Gostivar landmark monument sign located on the Vardar riverbank with messages honoring the founders of Slavic literacy.

By writing hateful graffiti over the original message, unknown perpetrators had vandalized Thursday the landmark. The incident was reported to the police. mr/
