Nine active wildfires on Friday, says CMC head 

Skopje, 2 August 2024 (MIA) - Currently there are nine active wildfires in the country, of which the most difficult one is on the Osogovo Mountains since it is on inaccessible terrain. New wildfires have been registered on the territories of Ohrid and Skopje, the head of the Crisis Management Center, Stojanche Angelov, said on Friday.

“The fire on the Osogovo Mountains, which is raging in the Municipality of Probishtip in the village of Zelengrad, has been causing us great difficult for several days since it is burning on an exceptionally difficult terrain,” Angelov said, adding that eight helicopters will be deployed to fight the wildfires.

Angelov said another difficult wildfire is burning in the Municipality of Makedonski Brod, in the villages Tazhevo and Breznica towards Jasen. It has been burning for several days in terrain that is difficult to reach. A police helicopter has been deployed to deal with the fire, as well as a team from Hungary composed of 46 firefighters and specialized ground vehicles. Fifty members of the Army, 20 local firefighters and the local population are also working to put out the fire.

The fire on Ilinska Mountain is also proving difficult to extinguish, with three “Air Tractor” deployed since Friday morning, in addition to ground efforts to put out the fire.

Members of the Army and local population are engaged in the efforts to put out a wildfire in Probishtip as well.

Angelov said a strong wildfire broke out Friday on the territory of the Municipality of Ohrid, near the village of Kosel, which poses a risk to a nearby pine forest. The CMC has deployed one helicopter to deal with the fire. 
New wildfires have also been registered on the territory of Skopje – in the Municipality of Zelenikovo and near the village of Ljubanci.
