Mickoski: Romani Language Day a reminder that we must protect the language, education is key

Skopje, 5 November 2024 (MIA) – Romani Language Day is a reminder that we have to preserve this language making sure it will keep on thriving, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Tuesday marking World Day of Romani Language.

“By supporting education, cultural events and international initiatives, we can rest assure that Romani language will continue to be part of our cultural treasure,” he noted.

Over the past several decades, Mickoski added, serious efforts have been made to protect and advance Romani language and culture, however, many challenges remain because Romani language is at risk of disappearing as a result of assimilation and lack of systemic support.

“Education is of key importance. Education should be available and inclusive for everyone, because it is the only way to build a society that respects all cultures and diversity… Unfortunately, challenges exist that prevent many young people from getting this chance. Some of them include economic barriers, lack of resources and unequal opportunities. These challenges have to be overcome by us, together,” Mickoski said adding: “Our objective is to build a system that will enable quality and available education for everyone.”

According to the PM, World Day of Romani Language, marked annually on November 5, is a reminder that forces should be joined to enable better inclusion and support of the Romani community.
