Exhibition opens to celebrate North Macedonia’s 30-year-anniversary since accession to UN

Skopje, 6 April 2023 (MIA) - An exhibition dedicated to the 30th anniversary of North Macedonia's accession to the United Nations opened on Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event is co-organized with the State Archives of the Republic of North Macedonia as well as in cooperation with the UN Resident Coordinator in Skopje.

Deputy Foreign Minister Fatmire Isaki addressed the event, highlighting the importance of the country’s membership in the UN family. She stressed that North Macedonia has proven that diplomacy and dialogue, understanding and compromise can resolve the most difficult issues and new friends and allies can be gained.

"“North Macedonia continues to develop relations with UN member states and aims to strengthen multilateralism towards securing peace, stability, development of democracy and human rights, economic and social prosperity on a regional and global level. As OSCE Chair, the biggest regional security organization, we promote these principles that come from the UN Charter, which need to be reaffirmed more than ever before. We know what it means to fight for one’s principles, self-declaration and international recognition,” Isaki said.

She added that a long and difficult road was taken since the acceptance of the first UN mission until the OSCE Chairmanship, full of challenges, uncertainty, but also moments of pride and acknowledgment.

"For all that time, we were held afloat by our faith in us, our faith in our citizens and our right to exist. We also believed in the principles of the UN Charter and the need for dialogue, cooperation and compromise in resolving open issues,” said Isaki.

State Archives Director Emil Krsteski said that the anniversary has motivated the MFA and the State Archives to hold the project together.

“Accession to the UN wasn’t sudden, it had its own development of diplomatic and state activities. The authors of the exhibition will take you on a journey through time, back to when the UN General Assembly accepted our country as the 181st member of the UN,” Krsteski said.

UN Resident Coordinator in Skopje Rossana Dudziak also addressed the event, underlining that multilateralism is constantly tested in a world that always presents challenges.

"Therefore, today, I’d like to acknowledge the country’s active participation in all international bodies, committees, discussions and UN processes. North Macedonia continuously demonstrates dedication to the 2030 Agenda despite the challenges it faces. It has finalized its first voluntary National Review in 2020 to follow the progress towards the 2030 Agenda, right when the Covid19 pandemic first started," she said.

The event was also attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps in North Macedonia, as well as state institutions.

The exhibition will be open throughout the next two weeks at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, the MFA said. dk/nn/
