Daycare centers suspend strike
Skopje, 27 April 2022 (MIA) — Preschool teachers and childcare workers have resumed their duties after they agreed Wednesday to suspend the strike following negotiations between the government and the Education, Science and Culture Workers’ Union. Meanwhile, elementary and high school teachers nationwide rejected the government’s offer of 12 percent raises and are continuing their strike for higher pay. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, daycare centers reopened at full capacity this morning. The centers had been admitting children even during the two-week strike, except childcare was being provided by personnel other than teachers and childcare workers. Yesterday, the Education, Science and Culture Workers’ Union leader Jakim Nedelkov said striking teachers, as a further sign of dissatisfaction with the outcome of the negotiations, would hold a mass protest in front of the Government on Wednesday, May 4. The nationwide teachers strike over pay started on April 11. Teachers are demanding 18.4-percent raises in line with the recent 18.4-percent increase of the national minimum wage from 15,200 [EUR 246] to 18,000 [EUR 291] denars. mr/
