Aggeler: Judges in any court, any country need to make decisions based on law, without interference

Skopje, 30 October 2023 (MIA) — Interference by private persons or public officials in judicial processes cannot be tolerated by the judiciary, by the government or by the people of North Macedonia because it undermines public trust in the institutions and officials; justice must be transparent, US Ambassador Angela P. Aggeler responded to a Sitel TV query citing reports that the ambassador had recently visited the Supreme Court at the request of judges who were under severe pressure from the government and seeking protection from political revanchism.

In her response, Aggeler said it had been her pleasure to meet with the Supreme Court Chief Judge and other judges. She added that judges in any court and in any country needed to make decisions based on the law and without any interference.

According to the US Embassy's social media, Ambassador Aggeler had met with Supreme Court Chief Judge Besa Ademi to discuss the importance of judicial independence and transparency.

"She also had the opportunity to meet Supreme Court judges and reiterate our shared interest in strengthening the rule of law and fighting corruption," the US Embassy said in a recent Facebook post.

"The United States will always be here to support the rule of law and work together to achieve a prosperous and secure North Macedonia," it added. mr/
