‘All For Fair Trials’: Criminal Code amendments to result in expiration of statute of limitations in 14 cases with over 80 defendants

Skopje, 7 September 2023 (MIA) – The adoption of the amendments to the Criminal Code will enable the expiration of the statute of limitations in 14 court cases with over 80 defendants, according to the estimates of the Coalition All For Fair Trials published Thursday on Facebook. The Coalition noted that the estimate does not include cases which are currently being processed at the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption.

According to the Coalition, the amendments that were expressly adopted on Wednesday will result in the expiration of the statute of limitations for the following cases: TNT, Talir, Talir 2, Treasury, Tariff, Design, Toplik, Titanic, Tenders, Titanic 2, Trajectory, Spanish Stairs, Target/Fortress, and the case on Stevcho Jakimovski.

The amendments caused reactions in the public because they refer to articles which “soften” the sanctions which concern officials and heads of public enterprises and institutions.

According to the Government, which flagged the amendments with the EU flag, the amendments are being adopted in order to harmonize with the EU directives. While, according to the opposition, the amendments are an attempted “amnesty” for current officials ahead of a potential change in government. The EU Delegation in Skopje is assessing if the EU flag was misused.
