Russia warns it also has Arctic interests as US eyes Greenland

Moscow, 15 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Given US President Donald Trump's claims over Greenland, Russia has warned against disregarding its own interests in the Arctic, according to a report by state news agency TASS on Thursday.

"All attempts to ignore Russia's interests in the polar region, above all in the field of security, will not go unanswered and will have very far-reaching consequences," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in Moscow.

Trump often cites Russian and Chinese activities near the Arctic island as justification for his demand for control over Greenland, saying their presence makes the land mass critical to US security needs.

Zakharova criticized the military reconnaissance mission by several European NATO states to better protect the autonomous island belonging to Denmark, calling it "the next provocation by Western countries" who also wanted to impose their order in this region of the world.

She said European states needed to be aware that this endangered Russia's security as an equal Arctic littoral or coastal state.

Russia, with its long northern coastline on the Arctic Ocean, regards the Arctic as its sphere of interest. It is making greater use of sea routes in the region and expanding its military presence.
