Mourinho hints at return to Real Madrid if Perez wins election

London, 4 June 2026 (PA Media/dpa/MIA) - Jose Mourinho appears to have confirmed he has agreed to return to Real Madrid as manager if Florentino Perez wins next Sunday's presidential election.

Perez posted a video on X in which Mourinho features in a Real shirt saying: "Yes," while the only other words to accompany it say: "Meanwhile, on TV, they just keep talking and talking and talking. So much history to be made."

The video was posted in response to a television appearance by Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme, promoting his bid to takeover as president.

Perez has made no secret of his intention to name Mourinho as head coach should he win the vote on Sunday and remain for an eighth term in the role, but his social media post appears to have made it official.

It has been reported that Benfica boss Mourinho has agreed a three-year-deal to return to the Bernabeu Stadium and replace Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January after Xabi Alonso's departure.

Benfica have yet to confirm Mourinho's departure, while speculation has been mounting that Marco Silva is being lined up as his successor after the Portuguese announced he will leave Fulham when his contract expires in June.

Former Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham boss Mourinho, who has also had two spells in charge of Chelsea, spent three years in charge of Real until 2013.

He guided them to the Spanish title in 2012 having won the Copa del Rey with the club the previous season.

Mourinho has won the Champions League with both Porto and Inter – he also won the old UEFA Cup with the Portuguese club – the Europa League with United and the Conference League with Roma.

Benfica appointed Mourinho in September 2025 and finished third in the Portuguese top flight this season.

It has also been reported that Riquelme has said he will make Manchester City striker Erling Haaland his first "galactic" signing should he become Real's new president.
