Iran says it has shot down a second US military plane, Trump says downing of US jet will not affect negotiations

Tehran, 4 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Iran on Friday said it had shot down a second US  military plane.

Air defences targeted and hit an A-10 aircraft, known as a Warthog, near the Strait of Hormuz, the Fars news agency reported, citing the army press office. The information could not be independently verified.

There was no initial confirmation of the incident from the United States, which has been waging war against Iran alongside Israel since Feb. 28.

US broadcaster CBS reported the Warthog pilot ejected over the Gulf and was successfully recovered.

Earlier Friday, Iran said it had shot down an F-35 fighter jet.

A statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's elite military force, said the fighter jet was shot down over Iranian airspace by a new, advanced defence system.

However, military experts pointed out on social media that the published photos appeared to show the wreckage of an F-15.

One of the two crew members is said to have been rescued by US special forces, while the search for the second continues.

According to a media report, US President Donald Trump does not believe that any talks with Iran will be affected by the crash.

TV broadcaster NBC News reported, citing a telephone interview with the president, that when asked whether this would have an impact on diplomatic talks, he said: "No, not at all. No, it’s war. We’re in war."
