Zoran Zaev resigns as prime minister
Skopje, 22 December 2021 (MIA) – Prime Minister Zoran Zaev on Wednesday sent his resignation letter to the Parliament Speaker. He wrote he won’t explain the reasons why he is stepping down in a public address. The outcome after the local elections, Zaev said, carries both national and political weight in the political moment the country is in. “Given the circumstances, due to the policies I trust, it would be politically irresponsible and unjustified before my people and my country to continue to be at the helm of the government on the Euro-Atlantic integration path. I believe that another prime minister from within SDSM could do it better,” Zaev wrote in his resignation letter. By stepping down, he said he wants to serve as an example contributing to strengthening the democratic capacity. The outgoing Prime Minister in the letter recalled that during his term, historic decisions had been made for the country, including the Prespa Agreement with Greece, NATO membership and the One Society for All concept. According to sources, Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi is expected to verify Zaev’s resignation on Thursday before the monthly Q&A session. The President after the prime minister’s resignation should give a mandate to form a government to the new prime minister-designate within 10 days, according to the Constitution, which has 20 days to present the new government’s program to Parliament.
