Zelensky says tougher EU sanctions on Russia will help end the war

Kiev, 2 October 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for even tougher economic sanctions against Russia at a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Kiev.

The current heavy Russian bombardments are proof that the punitive measures adopted by Europe so far are not sufficient, Zelensky said on Monday.

Any deliveries that enable Russia to increase its own arms production must be stopped, he demanded.

"This is clearly in the interest not only of Ukraine, but also of everyone worldwide who wants an end to the war as soon as possible."

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union has adopted 11 sanctions packages, the most recent last June.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, meanwhile, expressed confidence in his country's aspirations for EU membership. "It is only a matter of time," he said in Kiev at a joint press conference with EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell.

"Everyone is determined to move forward at top speed," he said.
