Zaev, Tsipras to receive Peace of Westphalia Prize
Skopje, 28 August 2021 (MIA) — Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will receive on Saturday the 2020 International Peace of Westphalia Prize for the landmark Prespa Agreement that solved the Macedonian name dispute, MIA reports from Athens. Zaev and Tsipras travelled to Münster, Germany, on Friday and met ahead of Saturday’s ceremony. “Brave decisions bring peace and build friendships. The biggest prize for our achievement was securing a future for the young people we brought together. We’re happy with our accomplishments, it’s a great honor that the world recognized the greatness of what we achieved with the Prespa Agreement,” Zaev posted on Facebook. “Currently in Münster for the Peace of Westphalia Prize,” the Syriza leader posted alongside a photograph with Zaev. Latvian President Egils Levits will award them the prize, as a representative of the three Baltic states honored with the 2018 Peace of Westphalia Prize. According to the official press release North Macedonia’s government issued on Friday, the Peace of Westphalia Prize recognizes Zaev and Tsipras’s setting an example of the highest diplomacy in solving an open issue and making a significant contribution to the stability in the Balkans. Established in 1998 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of Westphalia Peace that ended the Thirty Years War in Europe, the prize is awarded biennially for outstanding merits in enhancing European and global peace. The Peace of Westphalia Prize is given by the German Economic Society for Westphalia and Lippe. Previous recipients include former President of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, King Abdullah II of Jordan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan. Zaev and Tsipras were supposed to receive the award on 19 September 2020, but due to the pandemic, the ceremony was postponed for 2021. In 2020 Zaev and Tsipras also scooped the Hessian Peace Prize.
