Xhaferi-Zhelyazkov: Positive sign in intensifying relations after Bulgaria elections

Skopje, 30 June 2023 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi met Friday with Bulgarian counterpart Rosen Zhelyazkov on the sidelines of the conference observing the International Day of Parliamentasim in Leon, Spain.

Xhaferi and Zhelyazkov expressed satisfaction over their second meeting in just over a month, which represents a positive sign in intensifying relations after the elections in Bulgaria and verification of the National Assembly's mandate, the Parliament said in a press release.

Zhelyazkov said they are closely monitoring the dynamics of political statements in North Macedonia.

He said there are certain politicians in both countries who give statements that are not in line with the tone of communication that is necessary at this time. These statements aim to gain daily political points but fail to demonstrate farsightedness by mature politicians who share the same goal.

Speaker Xhaferi said the Parliament is prepared to proceed within its competencies at the moment a petitioner submits the initiative for constitutional amendments to the institution.

Xhaferi also briefed Zhelyazkov on the procedure and duration of the process for adoption of the constitutional amendments. He said the process is not easy but necessary for North Macedonia's progress towards the Union.

The Speaker expressed belief this will be the last step that North Macedonia makes in order to open the EU accession negotiations, reads the press release.
