Skopje, 4 May 2023 (MIA) - As we look back on our achievements, we should also acknowledge the challenges we have faced and continue to face, including political instability, economic disparities, environmental degradation and security threats. Russian aggression against Ukraine is a major security concern in the Black Sea region and is in violation of international law. I take this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the principles of international law and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. We stand firmly with the people of Ukraine at this difficult time and call on all sides to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi told the 61st General Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC) in Ankara.
Xhaferi stressed that PABSEC is vocal in condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine and called on the Russian Federation to immediately stop its military operations in Ukraine, withdraw its forces and fully respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"The Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia also calls on the international community to take a strong stand against Russian aggression and support the Ukrainian Government in its efforts to restore peace and stability in the region," said Xhaferi.
The Speaker also mentioned economic cooperation as well as the promotion of intercultural dialogue.
"As a member of this organization, North Macedonia contributes to the common vision of encouraging economic cooperation, political stability and cultural exchange. We have shown our commitment to regional and international cooperation. Our country has made significant progress in strengthening its institutions, strengthening the economy and promoting the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. We believe that our PABSEC membership not only benefits us, but also contributes to the overall development and growth of the Black Sea region.
As PABSEC member, North Macedonia commits to active participation in the organization's initiatives and work towards achieving its goals. We are willing to contribute to the development of regional projects and share our expertise and experience," the Parliament Speaker pointed out.
Our country, he added, is committed to promoting trade, investments and innovation, supporting the development of transport and communication networks.
"We also value the importance of cultural exchange and contacts. North Macedonia, with its rich cultural heritage and diverse society, is willing to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding," Xhaferi said.
He expressed confidence that North Macedonia's PABSEC membership will bring new opportunities, stronger partnerships and a brighter future for the region.
"As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of PABSEC, we can proudly say that we have come a long way. We have demonstrated that our shared geography is not a barrier but an asset, and that our shared vision can inspire us to achieve great things. We also look to the future with a sense of optimism and determination. We are confident that our common future is bright and that together we can build a more prosperous, peaceful and sustainable Black Sea region. At the same time, we recognize that there is still much work to be done. The world is changing rapidly, and we face new challenges and opportunities that require us to adapt and innovate. We need to strengthen our cooperation in key areas, including trade, energy, tourism and culture, and explore new avenues of cooperation, such as digitalization and innovation. In addition, we should promote the values that underpin our cooperation, such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law. These values are not only essential for our well-being, but for the stability and security of our region," said Xhaferi.
Today, he added, we celebrate a milestone in our journey of cooperation, solidarity and friendship characterized by our shared geography, shared vision and shared future.
