Xhaferi - Aggeler: Upcoming elections crucial for country's future, to affirm its future direction

Skopje, 2 February 2024 (MIA) - Ensuring continuity and efficiency in the work of the Government and state institutions, and investing efforts in the preparation and realization of fair and democratic elections was in the focus of the meeting of caretaker Prime Minister Talat Xhaferi and United States Ambassador Angela Aggeler on Friday.

PM Xhaferi highlighted the Government's commitment to the strategic partnership with the United States, noting he would continue to promote that cooperation in the new post, the Government said in a press release.

Xhaferi said the presidential and parliamentary elections are crucial for the country's future and will affirm its future direction. Interlocutors agreed that the process of EU accession negotiations would ensure a positive transformation of North Macedonia's democratic capacities, enhancement of the reform processes in the rule of law and fight against corruption.

Aggeler congratulated Xhaferi on the election to the PM's post, accentuating his important role in the country's democratic development as the first ethnic Albanian Speaker and now the first-ever ethnic Albanian PM.

The U.S. Ambassador noted that the caretaker PM's election sends a strong message that diversity and respect of the rich cultural heritage make the country even stronger. Aggeler reaffirmed Washington's strong support toward the European Union, expressing readiness for further close cooperation with the Government on that path.

Xhaferi said the Government is committed to continue the reform processes related to North Macedonia's European integration, aimed at larger economic prosperity and democratic development.

The PM also briefed the Ambassador on the amendments to the Law on Restrictive Measures, which is currently undergoing further consultations, followed by its inclusion in the agenda of the next Government session.

In addition, Xhaferi thanked Aggeler for U.S. continued support to North Macedonia's stability and prosperity, adding that the country's contribution in collective security as a NATO member would continue, reads the press release.
