Xhaferi – Schinas: North Macedonia is a constructive partner of the EU in migration and visa policy

Skopje, 16 February 2024 (MIA) – Caretaker Prime Minister Talat Xhaferi held a meeting Friday with the European Commissioner for Promoting European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas, as part of the Munich Security Conference, said the Government in a press release. The meeting focused on several topics of interest to North Macedonia and the European Union, with a focus on migration, cooperation with Frontex, and the coming elections.

 

 

Commissioner Schinas voiced gratitude for the constructive support and cooperation with North Macedonia in the field of migration and the alignment with the EU’s visa policy. He underlined that the country needs a peaceful and democratic election process with a “positive European atmosphere”.

 

“Prime Minister Xhaferi said the clear EU perspective remains the main driver of change in the region and stressed that the Government will demonstrate continuity and constructiveness in the realization of the European agenda in the coming period,” said the Government.

 

 

Xhaferi noted that the cooperation with Frontex was on a very high level in 2023, and recalled that the operationalization of the Agreement between the Republic of North Macedonia and Frontex was one of the priorities.

 

According to the press release, PM Xhaferi and Commissioner Schinas also spoke about ongoing domestic political issues and the preparation for the holding of the presidential and parliamentary elections, with Xhaferi underscoring that the “progressive European forces in the country are set to unite and make a new step forward in the Euro-integrations”.
