Xhaferi – Kyuchyuk: EU membership remains North Macedonia’s strategic goal

Skopje, 2 February 2024 (MIA) – Caretaker Prime Minister Talat Xhaferi met on Friday with the Bulgarian Member of European Parliament (MEP) and the Parliament’s rapporteur on North Macedonia, Ilhan Kyuchyuk.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on the country's progress in the context of the European integration, as well as the internal political situation ahead of the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

Xhaferi highlighted that EU membership remains a strategic goal for the country, noting that the government is resolutely committed to meeting obligations outlined in the EU’s negotiating framework, the government said in a press release.

Xhaferi and Kyuchyuk shared opinions on the implemented reforms in the country, as well as the dynamics of relations between the Western Balkan countries and the European Union.  They agreed that the continuation of the enlargement process is in the interest of the European Union. In this way, the Western Balkan countries will be focused on strengthening the implementation of reform processes.

Expressing gratitude for the close and active cooperation with MEP Kyuchyuk over the past four years, Xhaferi highlighted his satisfaction with Kyuchyuk’s support in promoting North Macedonia’s EU dossier in the European Parliament, acknowledging the MEP's significant personal contributions to pivotal decisions for the country.

The recent successful example in this regard was Jean Monnet Dialogue process, where discussions unfolded regarding the new Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, which were unanimously adopted by the members of parliament.

Offering congratulations to Xhaferi on his appointment as the caretaker prime minister, Kyuchyuk highlighted that this choice signifies success not only for North Macedonia but also for the region, noting that North Macedonia has once again become a model for many European countries, showcasing successful functioning as a multi-ethnic democracy. He highlighted that the country can still rely on his support and expressed optimism that, after the upcoming elections for Members of the European Parliament, there will be an opportunity to continue contributing to the swift integration of North Macedonia into the EU.
