Would be unparalleled for gov’t tasked with organizing elections to collapse, says Kovachevski

Skopje, 7 February 2024 (MIA) – The concept of caretaker government in our country is an unparalleled phenomenon that doesn’t exist anywhere in the world and I think it would be another unparalleled phenomenon if a government tasked with organizing elections manages to collapse, said SDSM leader Dimitar Kovachevski on Wednesday, stressing that he doesn’t believe it will happen and is convinced that the Government will organize fair and democratic elections.

Kovachevski said there are several “phenomena” in the country, pointing to the concept of caretaker government, the former Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO) and the Operational Technical Agency (OTA), which, he said, are the result of “the manner in which VMRO-DPMNE ruled until 2016”.

“The caretaker or Przhino-style Government is one phenomenon, SPO is another, which doesn’t exist anymore, and OTA is the third phenomenon, which doesn’t exist anywhere in the world, and they are all results of the manner in which VMRO-DPMNE ruled until 2016,” said Kovachevski.

The caretaker Government, according to Kovachevski, will succeed in managing affairs until the holding of elections, pointing to the solution of the issue at the Health Insurance Fund as an example, which he said was solved upon the proposal of SDSM’s ministers.

Regarding the claims made by ministers Azir Aliu and Fatmir Mexhiti from the Alliance of Albanians regarding Tuesday’s government session, Kovachevski said he isn’t able to comment on something he didn’t attend, and that the caretaker Prime Minister should be asked about any events in the Government.

“Yesterday I spoke with Minister Aliu, and with Taravari. I said the internal relations and dynamics of any political party should be solved within the political party,” said Kovachevski.

Asked if he approves of the dismissal of two directors coming from AA, Kovachevski said all dismissals should be examined, noting that he also didn’t approve the dismissal of the director of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases done by Minister Mexhiti, and, from that aspect, he said, he wouldn’t comment on the dismissals made by the Government.

“If a party which is a member of the Government requests that its members in Government be replaced with others, then of course those that are in Parliament will propose that. This has happened in the past with other parties as well, who have had their representatives in the Government and then proposed others. After all, this is a request of the political parties themselves,” said Kovachevski.

The former Prime Minister said he had excellent cooperation with all ministers, “since,” he said, “the Government works in a professional manner”.
