We need a new Criminal Code based on European practices, says PM

Skopje, 19 December 2024 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has highlighted Thursday the need for a new Criminal Code based on European practices, because the current one would lead to amnesty for part of the crimes for which there are grounds for suspicion and evidence.

"This Criminal Code will, in a way, give amnesty to crime, for which there are grounds for suspicion and evidence, be it in the stage of investigation or trial. This is because the Criminal Code is more favorable for such cases and, as per the Constitution, the statute of limitations will expire, irrespective of us passing a new law. The new Code cannot bring back these cases," PM Mickoski told MTV.

He is adamant that a new Criminal Code based on practices from EU member-states is a necessity.

"A new Code based on European practices would be a part of the comprehensive reform in the judiciary and the prosecution, and we should have this in our plans," adds Mickoski.
